There are many factors that go into buying a home along with a wide range of emotions. Are there enough bedrooms? Do you have enough to cover the mortgage? Will it slowly be eaten away by a pest I may not even know I have?
No home owner wants to hear the word termite, and Subterranean Termites are just as unpopular as any other. They are found throughout every state in the US with the exception of Alaska. The Eastern Subterranean Termites thrive in the warm environments and thus are more common in the Southeastern US and subsequently, Florida. They require a high level of moisture to sustain a colony and come directly from the ground up. The most visible sign that your home may be infested with Subterranean Termites is the presence of mud tubes. Since they must stay damp, they build tunnels from their nesting site to their feeding site out of mud to ensure they do not dry out. Their numbers are vast and can range from a hundred thousand to over a million, and their damage to the home can be devastating.
Here are some key tips to ensure your house remains Subterranean Termite free:
- A termite inspection is always the fastest and most effective way to prevent your house from becoming a snack. Shop around and pick a company with a long history and good reputation in your area for your best chance at permanent removal.
- If damage or activity is found, treatment is likely the next choice. Again, we always recommend that our clients shop around. Talk to people who have had this procedure done and look into the company itself and make sure they are properly licensed to do termite treatments. It is recommended that three companies be contacted to get quotes. Take your time, immediate decision making often ends up in regret. Chances are the colony has been there for some time, and a few weeks is not going to make a significant difference.
- Keep up the renewal services to make sure that year in and year out your house remains Subterranean Termite Free! Additionally, it is a good idea to schedule a yearly inspection to ensure nothing has changed and that no new colonies have penetrated the barrier.
