European Honey bees are social insects with a caste system, where each bee plays its own role. They are an essential part of our ecosystem and assist with pollinating crops and providing honey. Unfortunately, today’s population of European Honey Bees is rapidly decreasing around South Florida. Their decline is due to many different factors which include the Varroa Mite, loss of habitat and some pest control practices, with the Varroa Mite being at the top of the list.
The Varroa Mite is a parasitic mite that feeds on the blood of the bees. These mites create open wounds on the bees and leave them vulnerable to infection. A large Varroa Mite infestation has been known to wipe out an entire colony.
Honey bees create a problem when they build their hive in man-made structures or around high traffic areas. Naturally, bees want to protect their brood and colony, which may cause issues especially if the hive is in an area with children and pets. Instead of killing off the colony, Safe Home Pest Control has vowed to remove and relocate the bees, when possible. We are joining the fight to keep the European honey bee alive and we encourage you to call us for a safe live bee removal when they become a problem.
